Drawing on research across education, psychology, workforce development, counseling, public health, and policy, this landscape analysis examines the conditions affecting LGBTQ+ youth as they explore career options, gain hands-on experience, and navigate pathways into the workforce. It also identifies opportunities for career readiness systems to create environments in which LGBTQ+ young people can participate fully and pursue their goals without having to choose between opportunity and safety.
Key Findings
- Safety shapes which futures feel possible. Nearly 70% of LGBTQ+ youth anticipate discrimination in their future careers, leading some to rule out pathways before they have had the opportunity to explore them fully.
- Barriers accumulate across environments. Experiences of rejection, discrimination, and exclusion within families, schools, and workplaces can affect mental health, educational engagement, and long-term career development.
- Career readiness systems often overlook LGBTQ+ youth. Traditional frameworks rarely account for identity development, disclosure decisions, workplace climate, or anticipated discrimination. LGBTQ+ youth also remain largely absent from federal career education and workforce policy infrastructure and related data collection.
- Access to opportunity is not enough without access to safety. Policy protections and institutional practices vary widely across states, schools, programs, and employers, shaping whether LGBTQ+ youth feel safe enough to participate, persist, and envision themselves within different career pathways.
- Effective career readiness begins with inclusive conditions. Identity-informed guidance, affirming adults, structural inclusion, peer and family support, wraparound services, and meaningful youth leadership can expand young people’s sense of possibility and strengthen engagement.
